(Some of our founding members)
The church started with a prayer meeting held in the home of Reverend Cecil Cunningham. After prayer meeting a discussion was held about organizing a church. A collection was taken and a committee was appointed to obtain a building. Orange Temple Lodge Hall was rented for each Friday night and Sundays. May 15, 1953 Southern General Baptist Church was organized with 12 charter members.Reverend Cecil Cunningham, pastor and James C. Powell, deacon, constituting the ordained authorities. December 11, 1953 Reverend Harold Lucas was called to pastor. The name of the church was then changed to Friendship General Baptist Church. A committee was appointed to secure land for the purpose of erecting a church building. In the spring of 1954 the money to purchase a lot on the corner of Leith and Douglas Streets in Flint, Michigan was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Crafton. Work was soon started on the basement. June 4, 1954 the church voted to go into the Free Will Baptist Association. The church became a member of the Wolverine Association of Free Will Baptists of the state of Michigan. The church was now called Friendship Free Will Baptist Church. In the late summer of 1954 the church moved into the basement on Leith Street.May 19, 1956 Reverend Ira Nix was called to pastor. May 3, 1958 Reverend James C. Powell was called to pastor. Additions were made to the church building over the years. Reverend Powell pastored until 1981, a total of 23 years. Reverend Bob Trimble pastored from 1981 to 1988. Reverend Michael Lake pastored from 1988 to 1989. Reverend Curtis Lilly pastored from 1989 to present. In 1993 the church purchased 21.9 acres of land on Davison Road in Davison, Michigan for the purpose of building a new church. The building on Leith street was sold, and the church worshipped as Genesee Christian School from May 31, 1998 until July 18, 1999 while the new church building was being erected. The first service in the new building at 7110 Davison Road in Davison, Michigan was July 25, 1999. Since then the church purchased an adjacent 2.1 acres and built a ball field and a pavilion. |
